Making cakes

We have been thinking about birthdays and enjoyed making cakes. We decided that cakes are an essential part in celebrating birthdays!
Using an egg as a weight, we first weighed out and sifted the flour. We had to make sure the balances were balanced and work out what to do if one of them was 'up' or 'down'. We used words like heavy, light, heavier, lighter, balanced, the same. This is part of our maths curriculum in EYFS.

 Next we weighed the sugar.

We weighed the butter then creamed our cake mixture together.

Last of all, we cracked our weight, the egg, and mixed all of our ingredients together.
We put the mixture into cake cases and baked them in the oven. We looked at the changes (this is science in EYFS) and waited for them to cool. We decorated them and took them home to enjoy!

Settling in

Cherry class have had a super week and a half and are settling in well. We have spent lots it time exploring our new environment and are now pretty familiar with what things there are on offer to play with. We have a song which not only helps look after things but also reminds us where things go. You may have heard "Choose it, use it, put it away"!
We are also forming new friendships as we get to know one another through everyday interaction and circle time games. Children are much more confident in asking new friends their name and at joining in with something even if they don't know the children involved very well.
Here's a little snapshot of the things we've been doing:

And we've already celebrated three birthdays!!
