Diwali -The Hindu Festival of light

We have had a fabulous week learning all about Diwali.
We have loved dressing up in beautiful clothes and have loved acting out the story of Rama and Sita.

We have enjoyed exploring how Hanuman, the king of the monkeys, must have built a strong bridge to rescue princess Sita.

We have loved exploring patterns by looking at Rangoli patterns and have used peg boards and numicon beads to create patterns. We also made Rangoli patterns of our own.

We have loved mark making and measuring using real rice and all kinds of sparkly things!

We have made some beautiful Mendhi hand patterns and have loved painting our own patterns on our hands!
And coloured some lovely patterns.
We played a board game to try and rescue Sita from the island.

Wow! Such a busy but magical week......

Guy Fawkes

We have been finding out about the story of Guy Fawkes
We have been using our role play area to take on the roles of King James, Guy Fawkes and his plotters.
We also took on the roles of Queen and Princesses!

We used small world play to take on the role of Firefighters.

Good team work to get the water to flow through the hose!

We really enjoyed making paintings of exploding fireworks!

We used the magnetic letters to spell some firework words by segmenting the sounds first, e.g, p o p -pop.
We enjoyed using the computer to find out about fireworks. We were able to hear different firework noises too.

Food and farming

This week we have continued finding out about harvest and have been thinking about food and where it comes from. We looked at farm animals and found out what food comes from them. We had some interesting ideas!

We found out about the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. We made our own Sukkah - an outdoor shelter where Jewish people sit and share meals with their family. They decorate these with fruits and vegetables and we made our own collage fruits/vegetables. The children enjoyed role playing in the Sukkah.

We are making our own big tractor to play in. That will explain why lots of the children came home with red hair/clothes on Friday! Sorry! The children had so much fun!

We have set up our own farm shop selling local produce. The children have enjoyed taking on the roles of shop keeper and customers.

We used junk materials to make our own tractors.

Read Write Inc is going really well. The children are so engaged!

Fred talking - using magnetic letters to segment and blend to read cvc words.
